Providing a community platform for free and open-source software and peer directed projects.

Libera Chat is a next-generation IRC network that serves as a community platform for Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) and peer-directed projects. Based in Sweden as a non-profit organization, it provides a specialized environment for global collaboration.

The main features of this tool include:

  • Real-Time Collaborative Communication: As a "User-to-User" (U2U) service, it allows users to generate and exchange content instantly within a shared chat environment.

  • Secure Connectivity: The network supports and encourages secure connections using TLS (Transport Layer Security) encryption via port 6697.

  • Proactive Network Security: The platform actively protects its users by blocking spam and client exploits. It also maintains tools to proactively prevent the network from being used for illegal activities, such as piracy or the distribution of harmful media.

  • Strict Conduct Moderation: Libera Chat enforces an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that prohibits incitement to violence, doxxing, and defamation to ensure a reasonably safe environment for its communities.

  • Privacy-First Design: A central feature of the platform is its commitment to user anonymity; it does not require identity (ID) verification and prioritizes protecting users from surveillance or data breaches that could compromise their legal identities.

  • Peer-to-Peer File Transfer: Although the platform does not offer centralized file hosting, it supports DCC (Direct Client-to-Client), which allows users to establish direct peer-to-peer connections for transferring files.

  • Independent and Community-Funded: The network is supported by monetary and hardware donations from its community, allowing it to remain independent and resist regulatory overreach that might compromise the open nature of the service.
