A mobile app is now available on F-Droid to let you watch videos on PeerTubePeer. Tube is a federated (ActivityPub) video streaming platform using P2P (WebTorrent) directly in the web browser.

PeerTube is an open-source, decentralized video-sharing platform developed by the French non-profit Framasoft. Designed as an ethical alternative to Big Tech "monopolies," it allows individuals and organizations to create their own "homemade YouTube" while remaining part of a larger, interconnected network.

The main features of this tool include:

  • Federated "Fediverse" Model: Instead of one giant server farm, PeerTube consists of a network of small, autonomous, and interconnected platforms. Using the ActivityPub protocol, these platforms can "talk" to each other, allowing users to follow accounts and watch videos from other instances or even from platforms like Mastodon.

  • Privacy and Ethics: PeerTube does not rely on advertising, tracking, or opaque algorithms. Because it is free/libre software, it treats users as people rather than products to be profiled.

  • P2P Broadcasting: To prevent server overload during viral events, it uses WebRTC-based peer-to-peer broadcasting. This allows viewers to help share the video bandwidth with other people watching the same content simultaneously.

  • Comprehensive Creator Tools: Creators can live stream (via OBS/RTMP), interact through live chat, and access detailed analytics. It also features automatic synchronization, allowing creators to mirror their channels from remote platforms like YouTube or Vimeo.

  • Mobile and Offline Accessibility: A dedicated mobile app allows users to explore the entire "video fediverse" in a single interface. It supports offline viewing (without a premium subscription) and video publishing directly from a smartphone.

  • Advanced Administration: Instance owners have full control over their platform, including moderation policies, user registration, custom branding, and the ability to use remote runners for heavy video transcoding tasks.

  • Rich Viewing Experience: The platform offers a powerful, customizable video player that includes chapters, previews, subtitles, and support for themes and playlists.
